An t-Eilean Sgitheanach or in English the Isle of Skye is the largest of the Inner Hebrides with the busy town of Portree as its capital. Skye can be reached by ferry from Mallaig to Armadale within 30 minutes or over the 700 meters long Skye bridge from Kyle of Lochalsh to Kyleakin.
Skye is famous for the Cuillin Hills with their many peaks of which Sgurr Alasdair with its 993 meters is the highest. The slopes of the Cuillin Hills are very steep and only suitable for the more experienced climber. From Sligachan the view on the Cuillin Hills is spectacular. The only distillery on Skye can be found near Carbost in a Gaelic speaking area at loch Harport, where Talisker makes its excellent malts.
One of the interesting castles on Skye is Dunvegan, which is built in 1266 as a residence of the Macleods clan, who owned Skye, Lewis and Harris. Inside the castle the thousand year old Fairy Flag can be seen, about which the legend says that it would preserve the MacLeod clan 3 times from disasters. The garden at Dunvegan castle is beautiful and worth visiting.
View over Loch Ainort towards the Cuillin Hills. This was our first trip to Skye and we were impressed by the huge mountains.
View from Sligachan towards the Cuillin Hills.
One view even more impressive than the other.
View over Loch Caroy towards Healabhal Bheag (488 mtrs). This is exactly what we expected to see. Wonderful
Dunvegan Castle isn't the most beautiful castle i have seen in Scotland but the interior is well worth the trip. One of the interesting pieces is the Fairy Flag which is said to preserve the MacLeod clan 3 times for disasters and is more than thousend years old!
Do not forget to visit the gardens at Dunvegan Castle. Unfortunately a few big trees were blown over during the big storm but the gardens are still very beautiful
View towards Vaternish. What a joy to drive over those great roads.
